What's coming up next...

Hello everyone!  I hope you're having a lovely summer and finding a way to keep cool!
I'm back from some fabulous travels and looking ahead to some great music that we have planned for GATO 6, The Suzi Stern Group and a wonderful line up for our fall Casa Karen Concerts.

I'll give you more details as we approach some of these up coming shows but briefly here's what's on the horizon:

On other musical project notes: It's been exciting helping George get his own record label "Bus Biscuit Records"started...The GATO 6 C.D. really is beautiful...I can't wait for everyone to hear it...and I'm almost finished with my own all original C.D. which will hopefully be released in December.

About our featured Artist:
Rich Harney has been illuminating the Austin jazz scene as one of its brightest stars for the last decade. His remarkable talents as pianist, composer, and vocalist have gained him acclaim from the Austin American-Statesman as “one of Austin’s most valuable musical resources.” The Austin Jazz Players and Critics Poll honored him in 1993 as Composer of the Year, Best Songwriter, and Best Male Jazz Vocalist. He also received second place honors in the Austin Music Umbrella’s 1992 Composer Competition. In a 1990 competition adjudicated by Branford Marsalis, MUSICIAN magazine named Harney’s sextet as one of the twelve Best Unsigned Bands nationwide.

Harney has performed extensively as band leader and ensemble pianist with Gene Ramey, Tony Campise, Carmen Bradford (Count Basie Orchestra), Martin Banks (Duke Ellington Orchestra), Clifford Scott and Ted Piltzecker (Director, Aspen Music Festival’s Jazz Program). In addition to playing jazz festivals and local venues, he and singer Beth Ullman co-produced the popular concert series “Jazz at St. David’s” and the highly acclaimed theatrical concert “Dyin’ to Swing.

Suzi Stern Quintet with Stefan Karlsson

On Wed. May 16th tune into Live from Gueros! Larry Monroes radio broadcast from 6:00 to 8:00, or better still come on down to "Gueros" on south Congress.  I'll be interviewed and I'll be singing with George Oldziey, John Mills, Kris Afflerbaugh and Wayne Salzman. Should be a lot of fun!

On Tuesday April 17th I will be singing and narrating a Dylan Thomas Classic at the Perry Castenada Library (21st and Speedway in Austin Texas) with Rich Harney on keyboards and Alex Coke in from Amsterdam on sax and flutes, and Buddy Mohmad on Bass. This performance is FREE and starts at 7:00...sponsored by the University of Texas at Austin. How fun will this be...Christmas prose in April! Musical improvisations from the guys and several of my original compositions strung throughout the performance. Hope to see you there!

David Amram has composed more than 100 orchestral and chamber music works, written many scores for Broadway theater and film, including the classic scores for the films "Splendor in The Grass" and "The Manchurian Candidate;" two operas, including the groundbreaking Holocaust opera "The Final Ingredient;" and the score for the landmark 1959 documentary "Pull My Daisy," narrated by novelist Jack Kerouac. He is also the author of three books, "Vibrations," an autobiography, "Offbeat: Collaborating With Kerouac," a memoir, and "Upbeat: Nine Lives of a Musical Cat" published in the fall of 2007 by Paradigm Publishers.

A pioneer player of jazz French horn, he is also a virtuoso on piano, numerous flutes and whistles, percussion, and dozens of folkloric instruments. He has collaborated with Leonard Bernstein, who chose him as The New York Philharmonic's first composer-in-residence in 1966, Langston Hughes, Dizzy Gillespie, Dustin Hoffman, Willie Nelson, Thelonious Monk, Odetta, Elia Kazan, Arthur Miller, Charles Mingus, Lionel Hampton, E. G. Marshall, and Tito Puente.

Today, as he has for over fifty years, Amram continues to compose music while traveling the world as a conductor, soloist, bandleader, visiting scholar, and narrator in five different languages.
